Petr Hruška was born in Ostrava in 1964 and is a graduate of three universities: the Technical University of Ostrava (where he specialized in mineral raw materials), Masaryk University and the University of Ostrava (Czech literature and literary science). He is the author of seven poetry collections, of which the first, Obývací nepokoje [Living Unrooms], was published in 1995. One of his recent collections, Darmata [Darmas] (2012), received the Czech State Award for Literature in 2013.
A literary historian by profession, he teaches at universities and works for the Institute of Czech Literature of the Academy of Sciences. He has also written the monograph of Czech poet Karel Šiktanc Někde tady [Somewhere Here], published in 2010, and has prepared the three-volume work of Jan Balabán for publication. In 2015, he published the literary journal Jednou větou [In One Sentence].
